HAMILTON, Ontario, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Charles Howell III had a 2-under-par 68 Friday and saw his score stand up to give him the lead at the midway point of the $4.2 million Bell Canadian Open.

Howell made three birdies and a single bogey to get to 5-under 135 for the tournament and a one-shot lead after 36 holes. Tom Byrum, Hidemichi Tanaka and Kenichi Kuboya were hot on Howell's heels, tied in pursuit of the $756,000 first prize.

Fred Funk, Tom Lehman, Loren Roberts, Kelly Gibson and Briny Baird are tied for fifth at 137. Paul Azinger, Masters champion Mike Weir of Canada and Steve Allen are tied for 10th.

Howell is looking for his first win of the year. He lost to Weir in a playoff at the Nissan Open in Los Angeles. He has had five top-10 finishes.
