CHICAGO, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox on Tuesday activated former closer Billy Koch from the 15-day disabled list.
Koch, sidelined since Aug. 13 with a sore right elbow, will be available for Tuesday's game against Boston. He has struggled in his first season with the White Sox, losing his closer's job, and going 5-5 with a 5.55 ERA and 11 saves in 51 appearances.
Also, with rosters expanding, the White Sox made a host of other moves Tuesday.
They purchased the contracts of infielder Aaron Miles, righthanders Jose Paniagua and Joe Adkins, and outfielder Armando Rios, and designated lefthander Mike Porzio for assignment.
The White Sox, who hold a two-game lead over Kansas City and Minnesota in the American League Central Division, have been using lefthander Damaso Marte and righthander Tom Gordon to close games.
"I like to play (the) better teams, the ones with the same thing at stake as us," said designated hitter Frank Thomas. "It seems easier to play a whole month of baseball against everyone in the race."
