Oklahoma remains No. 1 in coaches poll

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Oklahoma remained No. 1 and upset victim Maryland fell clear out of the latest USA Today/ESPN Division I-A football coaches poll released Monday.

Oklahoma (1-0), which coasted to a 37-3 win over North Texas, received 37 first-place votes and 1,530 points in a nationwide panel of Division I-A coaches.

Defending national champion Ohio State (1-0) topped then-No. 19 Washington. The Buckeyes received 26 first-place votes and trail the Sooners by 32 points, 20 fewer than last week.

One of the biggest surprises of the first full weekend saw Maryland lose at Northern Illinois, 20-13, in overtime. The Terrapins were 14th before the upset loss.

Miami (1-0) received the remaining five first-place votes and is third in the poll with 1,467 points. The Hurricanes routed Louisiana Tech, 48-9, on Thursday.

Texas is fourth, followed by Southern California, Kansas State, Michigan, Georgia, Virginia Tech, and Florida State in the top ten.

North Carolina State is 11th, followed by Pittsburgh, LSU, Tennessee, Virginia, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Florida, Auburn, and Purdue.

Returning this week are Colorado at No. 22, Nebraska at No. 24, and Penn State (1-0) at No. 25.

Arizona State (0-0) is 21st and Iowa (1-0) is 23rd, with Washington and Oklahoma State also dropping out.
