CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Members of the football staff at No. 15 Virginia are awaiting results of a scheduled MRI on the right shoulder of senior quarterback Matt Schaub.
The reigning ACC Player of the Year, who has been touted as a Heisman Trophy candidate on the school's Web site, was hurt on the Cavaliers' opening drive of the season Saturday night on a tackle by blitzing Duke linebacker DeAndre White.
Coach Al Groh said his team would not use the Schaub injury as an excuse for the team's high expectations.
"We don't talk about injuries," Groh said. "This is our team as it's constructed right now, and this is the way we're going to play. As soon as we start talking about that, we start buying into a built-in excuse."
Sophomore Anthony Martinez, who redshirted last season, will start Saturday against South Carolina. He went 6-for-15 for 76 yards and threw a touchdown pass to tight end Heath Miller after replacing Schaub.
