NFL teams get down to player limit

NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- NFL teams had to be down to the mandated player limit of 53 by 4 p.m. Eastern time Sunday, and there were a number of notable cuts.

Veteran quarterback Neil O'Donnell, who led Pittsburgh to the Super Bowl in 1995, and fullback Greg Comella did not make the roster at Tennessee, and running back Reinard Wilson, a former No. 1 pick by Cincinnati, was axed by the Bengals.

Washington cut Danny Wuerffel on Saturday, and will make an unprecedented move by starting the campaign with just two quarterbacks on the roster, second-year pro Patrick Ramsey, the starter, and veteran Rob Johnson as the backup.

Other notables were wide receiver center Frank Winters (Green Bay), running back Robert Edwards (Miami), wide receiver MarTay Jenkins and linebacker Ricardo Wimbush (Atlanta), linebacker Mike Caldwell (Chicago), punter Travis Dorsch (Cincinnati), quarterback Jarious Jackson (Denver), wide receiver Charles Johnson (Buffalo), wide receiver Dedric Ward (New England), running back Adrian Murrell (Dallas), placekicker Brett Conway (Indianapolis), punter Lee Johnson (Philadelphia), defensive tackler Jim Flanigan (San Francisco), running back Ki-Jana Carter (New Orleans), tight end Ricky Dudley (Tampa Bay), running back Sedrick Irvin (Miami), fullback Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (Pittsburgh), and quarterback Todd Husak (New York Jets), who became expendable with the signing of Jamie Martin on Wednesday.

The Jets have lost starter Chad Pennington for 12 weeks and possibly the season with a fractured and dislocated left wrist.
