Agassi won the first set, 6-3, and Kafelnikov broke to start the second before showers interrupted play for 80 minutes. Agassi won the first point of the second game of the second set before the rain returned.

Officials decided the match would not continue Saturday night but resume Sunday after 1 p.m. EDT.

At 33, Agassi is playing some of the best tennis of his career and is ranked No. 1, the oldest male to accomplish the feat in the history of the ATP rankings.

Kafelnikov, ranked at No. 28, has been mediocre at best in what might be his final year as a professional. After seriously contemplating retirement at the end of 2002, the two-time Grand Slam champion is 27-21 this year, reaching one final.

Capriati, Henin-Hardenne advance

NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Jennifer Capriati of the United States and French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open.

The sixth-seeded American overcame France's Emilie Loit, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 Saturday, breezing through the first set. But Loit's tricky lefthanded game, which features offspeed strokes and a wicked inside-out forehand, began to click in the second set and she broke at the start of the third.

Capriati responded with a break and adjusted to her opponent before racing through the deciding set.

She will face No. 11 Elena Dementieva of Russia in the next round. Dementieva defeated American Amy Frazier, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-3).

Henin-Hardenne had a much easier time advancing to the fourth round, dispatching Saori Obata of Japan, 6-1, 6-2. She will face unseeded Dinara Safina of Russia, who defeated Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg, 6-4, 7-5.

A win at Deutsche could put Singh ahead

NORTON, Mass., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A win at the Deutsche Bank Championship would be Vijay Singh's third of the season, putting him one behind Tiger Woods.

But the former Masters champion said he is not motivated by giving Woods a run for Player of the Year honors.

"Still hasn't crossed my mind," Singh said. "I'm only going to think about it when the year is over with. I think that's not my objective right now."

Tiger Woods shot a 2-under 69 on Saturday but is tied for 24th at 3-under 139, eight shots behind Scott.

Adam Scott of Australia fired a course-record 9-under-par 62 on Saturday to surge past Vijay Singh and grab a two-shot lead midway through the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Like first-round leader and good friend Justin Rose, Scott is playing on a sponsor's exemption. He made the most of it at the TPC of Boston, collecting two eagles and five eagles to climb to 11-under 131.

Bottles fly at FIBA Tournament

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Taking hard fouls and ducking flying bottles, the United States earned a berth for the 2004 Olympics with a 87-71 victory over Puerto Rico.

A shoving match between Kenyon Martin and Daniel Santiago and a near-fight between Tracy McGrady and Eddie Casiano put a damper on the victory by the Americans (9-0).

"I don't think this team is going to lose again," said Team USA forward Jermaine O'Neal, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

In the second quarter, O'Neal elevated for a dunk and was pushed to the floor by Santiago, who quickly adopted an apologetic stance. But Martin intervened and shoved Santiago before the referees broke things up.

In the final seconds of the first half, McGrady harassed Casiano as he dribbled upcourt, getting away with a couple of fouls. He stripped Casiano as he knocked him to the floor, batting the ball into the backcourt.

As McGrady and Casiano got into it, players from both teams came off the benches and bottles of water were thrown at the players. Team USA coach Larry Brown was hit with a cup of beer.
