Terry Labonte wins NASCAR Southern 500

DARLINGTON, S.C., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Terry Labonte won his second NASCAR Southern 500 on Sunday, using a great pit stop at Darlington Raceway to snap his 156-race winless streak.

The 46-year-old Labonte took the lead when he was first off pit road, after a 13.1 second stop, with 32 laps to go.

When the green flag waved with 30 laps remaining in the 367-lap race, Labonte pulled away, building a 2.369-second lead over Kevin Harvick with 23 laps to go.

Labonte's last victory came at Texas Motor Speedway on March 28, 1999 and he did it where he scored his first Winston Cup win -- the Southern 500.

The two-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion started third and stayed within striking distance.

Kevin Harvick was second, followed by Jimmie Johnson -- giving Chevrolet a sweep of the top three positions. Rookie Jamie McMurray was fourth in a Dodge, followed by Bill Elliott.
