Roddick wins late-night match at Open

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick sweated out a match that lasted past midnight Friday night and on his 21st birthday reached the third round of the U.S. Open.

Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport and Wimbledon champion Roger Federer also advanced.

Roddick fought off three set points in the fourth-set tiebreak to defeat Ivan Ljubicic, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (10-8). The match ended nine minutes after Roddick turned 21.

Clijsters moved one step closer to her first Grand Slam championship with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Davenport stomped on Melinda Czink, 6-0, 6-2, in 42 minutes to reach the fourth round. The third-seeded American is battling a nerve ailment in two toes on her left foot.

Seeded second, Federer raced into the third round with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 rout of France's Jean-Rene Lisnard.
