RUSTON, La., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Miami, which finished second last season, got off to an impressive start Thursday night with a 48-9 rout of Louisiana Tech in college football.

The victory was highlighted by cornerback Antrel Rolle, who returned a punt and an interception for touchdowns. He scampered 66 yards to paydirt with a punt just five minutes into the game to give Miami a 14-0 lead.

Also, linebacker D.J. Williams returned a fumble 78 yards as the Hurricanes' defense scored three times.

Also, quarterback Josh Haldi hit Dan Sheldon on a 20-yard catch and run in overtime to give Northern Illinois a 20-13 win over No. 14 Maryland.

Haldi was 21-of-35 for 266 yards and two scores. Northern Illinois (1-0) had a chance for a go-ahead field goal with five seconds left in regulation, but Curtis Williams blocked a 43-yard attempt, forcing the extra session.

Elsewhere, it was BYU 24, Georgia Tech 13; Utah 40, Utah State 20; and Oregon State 40, Sacramento State 7.
