Stars extend Modano

IRVING, Texas, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The Dallas Stars have signed captain Mike Modano to a one-year contract extension through the 2004-05 campaign.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Modano, a five-time All-Star center, assumed the captaincy when the Stars lost defenseman Derian Hatcher, who signed a five-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings last month.

Dallas has decided not to give out multi-year contracts with the NHL labor agreement set to expire in September 2004. Many believe owners will try to implement a salary cap, which the players are not willing to accept.

The Stars' policy not to extend long-term deals cost them Hatcher, but they were able to convince Modano to accept a one-year extension.

Modano, 33, has spent his entire 14-year career with the Stars' franchise, which relocated from Minnesota in 1993-94. He is the franchise's all-time leader with 444 goals and 1,062 points in 1,056 games. He is one of just three American-born players to record at least nine 30-goal seasons, the others are Hall of Famers Joe Mullen and Pat LaFontaine.

Last season Modano had 28 goals and 57 assists in 79 games with a plus-minus rating of plus-34.
