GREENVILLE, N.C., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Running back Art Brown of East Carolina will miss the 2003 season after undergoing surgery on his right knee.
Brown, a senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., is expected to be redshirted and will be eligible for the 2004 campaign.
"We are saddened by the loss of Art to this unfortunate injury," said Coach John Thompson. "However, I am confident that his work ethic and determination will help him recover and be ready to help us in 2004. This creates an opportunity at that position, and we have several talented backs who will now have the chance to step up and make an impact."
Brown rushed for 1,029 yards on 214 carries last season even though he missed the final two games because of a groin injury. He was sixth best in the nation in scoring with 17 touchdowns, 14 rushing and three receiving. He rushed for at least 100 yards four times.
