Curtis shares NEC lead

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- British Open champion Ben Curtis shot a 6-under 64 Thursday that gave him a share of the lead with Sergio Garcia after one round of the NEC Championship.

Tiger Woods, who was shut out in the major tournaments for the first time in five years tied for third with Darren Clarke at 65.

There were 29 sub-par scores shot in the first round of this World Golf Championship event, being played at the Firestone Country Club.

Davis Love, Chris Riley, David Toms and Scott Verplank were all at 66 while Ernie Els was among those at 67. Newly crowned PGA champion Shaun Micheel had a 71.

Curtis shocked the golfing world by capturing the world's oldest tournament last month. His wedding is scheduled Saturday night after the third round.
