Wizards sign Jarvis Hayes

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Washington Wizards have signed first-round draft pick Jarvis Hayes, who will have an opportunity to fill the small forward spot manned by Michael Jordan.

Terms were not disclosed, but under the collective bargaining agreement, Hayes can earn up to $4.7 million over three years. The deal includes a club option for a fourth year worth $2.045 million.

Jordan retired after the 2002-03 season, which he began as a reserve but later moved into the starting lineup.

The 6-7, 220-pound Hayes, who was selected 10th overall, is a true small forward who left the University of Georgia after his junior season. He averaged 18.3 points last season and shot 43 percent from the arc.

"Jarvis has an opportunity to play a key role in help building our team for many years to come," said President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld. "He is an outstanding athlete with a very good outside shot."

Hayes was an honorable mention All-American selection and Georgia's first two-time All-SEC selection since Dominique Wilkins in 1981-82.
