Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

OAKMONT, Pa., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Medalist John Holmes joined Trip Kuehne and Bill Haas as winners Wednesday in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur.
Holmes, who posted a 138 total for two rounds of qualifying earlier in the week, eliminated Rick Reinsberg in the first round of match play at the Oakmont Country Club, 6 & 4.
Kuehne, brother of PGA Tour member Hank Kuehne and the low amateur in this summer's U.S. Open, pulled out a 2-up victory over Ty Harris.
Haas, son of newly-named President Cup team member Jay Haas, advanced to the second round with a 7 & 5 decision over Jessie Mudd.
Also advancing was former Walker Cupper Jerry Courville.
