NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Jennifer Capriati survived a second-round scare against Russian Elena Bovina Wednesday to reach the third round of the Pilot Pen Tennis.

Capriati recorded a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Anna Pistolesi of Israel.

The former Australian and French Open champion has played 14 tournaments this season but is seeking her first title. She was runner-up at Miami and Stanford.

Second seed Amelie Mauresmo of France overcame a back strain and eliminated 18-year-old Swiss qualifier Myriam Casanova, 7-5, 6-4.

In other second-round action, qualifier Cara Black of Zimbabwe upset fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-2. Hantuchova reached a career-best fifth in the WTA Tour rankings earlier this season but has struggled lately.
