Carter, 28, who was eligible for arbitration while with Edmonton but avoided it for a second straight year, scored 26 goals and had 34 assists in 79 games with the Rangers and Oilers last season.

"Anson Carter is a highly skilled, versatile player who we feel will play a very significant role on our team this season," said Coach and General Manager Glen Sather. "He is a very intelligent player who brings a strong presence and leadership qualities."

Carter eclipsed the 50-point mark for the second straight campaign last season, registering his 300th career point with a goal at Pittsburgh on Feb. 18, and played in his 400th game at Florida on Dec. 7.

Carter, one of a handful of African-American players in the NHL, has scored 143 goals and 167 assists in 452 games with the Rangers, Edmonton, Washington, and Boston.
