Newman wins Marketplace 400 at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman passed Kurt Busch with three laps remaining Sunday to win the GFS Marketplace 400 for his fifth NASCAR Winston Cup title of the season.

Newman took his third checkered flag in the last six races by 1.652 seconds over Kevin Harvick, the winner of Saturday's Busch Series race on the same track. He averaged 127.292 miles per hour in a Dodge Intrepid.

Harvick settled for his third straight top-five finish.

Reigning Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart came from 23rd to finish third. He was followed by rookie Greg Biffle and Steve Park.

Jimmie Johnson led a race-high 50 laps before dropping to 27th.

Matt Kenseth finished ninth and solidified his lead in the championship to 329 points over Dale Earnhardt Jr., who placed 32nd.

Jeff Gordon is a distant 461 points behind Kenseth in third after placing 30th.
