Seles begs out of U.S. Open

NEW YORK, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Monica Seles, a former world No. 1 in women's tennis, has withdrawn from the upcoming U.S. Open Tennis Tournament because of a foot injury.

Seles, who is a two-time Open champion, is plagued by a persistent stress fracture in her left foot, a injury which forced her to pull out of a number of tournaments this year, including Wimbledon.

Reports are that the injury may be career threatening.

"Monica has been advised by her doctors that the stress fracture in her left foot is not yet healed 100 percent," said her agent, Tony Godsick. "She is very disappointed, as she loves the U.S. Open and the New York crowds."

Seles, 29,who also is a four-time champion of the Australian Open, has not made a firm decision about her future. She also withdrew this summer from events at Toronto, San Diego, and Los Angeles, and retired from a match at the Italian Open in May.
