PITTSBURGH, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielder Bobby Hill from the Chicago Cubs Friday to complete the July 22 trade between the teams.
In that deal, the Pirates sent outfielder Kenny Lofton and third baseman Aramis Ramirez to the contending Cubs for infielder Jose Hernandez, minor league pitcher Matt Bruback, and a player to be named. That player turns out to be the 25-year-old Hill.
He will be added to the 40-man roster and assigned to Triple-A Nashville of the Pacific Coast League. Ironically, Bruback will be designated for assignment at the Triple-A level and removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Hill.
The switch-hitting Hill lost a spring training battle with veteran Mark Grudzielanek for the second base job in Chicago. He was hitting .288 with 23 doubles, six homers and 40 RBI in 92 games with Iowa this season, and went 1-for-4 while appearing in five games with the Cubs in June.
