MILWAUKEE, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Mike Schuler, a former head coach in the NBA, has been hired as an assistant by the Milwaukee Bucks.
He joins the staff of new coach Terry Porter.
Schuler, 62, brings more than 35 years of coaching experience to the Bucks. Most recently, he spent six years with Minnesota, three as an assistant coach and three as a scout.
"Mike is a first-rate coach who I had the pleasure of working with when I played with Portland and Minnesota," Porter said. "He has a terrific knowledge of the game, and is able to extend that to the players he works with. Mike is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff."
In 1986, Schuler became a head coach for the first time. He led Portland to a 49-33 record, and earned Coach of the Year honors. That season, the Trail Blazers had a league-high scoring average of 117.9 points per game.
He also has coached the Los Angeles Clippers and was coach at VMI.
