SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- American sprinter Mickey Grimes was stripped of his gold medal in the men's 100 meters Tuesday after failing a drug test at the Pan Am Games.
Grimes was the second individual stripped of a medal in track and field. Sunday, Letitia Vriesde of Suriname, who captured gold in the women's 800, failed her test with high dosage of caffeine.
Grimes, who won the 100 meters sprint on Wednesday with a time of 10.10 seconds, tested positive for the stimulant ephedrine at a level above that allowed by the International Amateur Athletic Federation.
"I understand that athletes need to take responsibility for everything we put in our bodies," Grimes said in a statement. "I made a mistake, and I know that my action carries with it a penalty."
Michael Frater of Jamaica was awarded the gold, while American Marcelle Scales and Canadian Anson Henry will receive the silver and bronze medal.
