old fashioned way and it all added up to the Brazilian driver's first IRL victory since the 2002 Indianapolis 500 -- a span of 20 races.

The driver who won the pole on Saturday took the lead after Scott Dixon's gearbox failed, dropping the driver from New Zealand out of the race after 157 laps. Castroneves defeated Tony Kanaan's Dallara/Honda by 0.8466 seconds.

Penske Racing teammate Gil de Ferran was third in a Dallara/Toyota followed by Tomas Scheckter of South Africa and rookie Daniel Wheldon of England.

Castroneves said his car experienced telemetry problems when he won the pole on Saturday. The problem continued when the command was given to start the engines.
