Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Dema Kovalenko scored in extra time Saturday to give D.C. United a 1-0 victory over New England and move into third place in the Eastern Conference.
The United (6-6-6, 24 points) have won four of their last six matches and hurdled the Revolution (5-7-7, 22 points) on Kovalenko's fifth goal of the season.
In the second minute of added time, second-half substitute Eliseo Quintanilla delivered a cross from the right flank met by a left-footed volley from Hristo Stoitchkov.
His shot was blocked by Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis, but the rebound fell to the feet of Kovalenko, who was crashing the net and knocked the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box.
