Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
PHOENIX, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Pinch-hitter Carlos Baerga's RBI single in the eighth inning Wednesday night gave Arizona a 3-2 victory over Montreal.
After Alex Cintron and Raul Mondesi singled off Luis Ayala (7-3), Baerga looped a base hit over the shoulder of Expos shortstop Orlando Cabrera to drive in Cintron with the go-ahead run. Mondesi was caught in a rundown and tagged out at second base to keep it a one-run game.
Matt Mantei had no problems protecting that lead, retiring Jamey Carroll, Jose Vidro and Vladimir Guerrero in order for his 14th save. Eddie Oropesa (3-2) picked up the win with a perfect eighth.
Expos starter Zach Day went six innings, allowing two runs and nine hits.
