ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Roy Halladay became the first 16-game winner in the major leagues Wednesday, carrying Toronto to a 7-3 win over Tampa Bay.
Dave Berg and Bobby Kielty each hit two-run homers as the Blue Jays beat the Devil Rays for the first time in seven tries.
The Devil Rays swept a three-game series at SkyDome last week and were trying to complete another three-game sweep of the Blue Jays on Wednesday. But Halladay (16-3) was standing in the way.
Tampa Bay did manage nine hits against Toronto's ace, but Halladay again displayed impeccable control, walking none and striking out six. He threw 106 pitches, 76 of which were strikes.
In his previous start on Aug. 1, Halladay had his record-tying 15-game winning streak broken in a 5-0 loss at Anaheim.
