GRAND BLANC, Mich., July 31 (UPI) -- Mike Sposa, who has just one top-10 finish this season, seized the first-round lead Thursday at the Buick Open.

British Open champion Ben Curtis, making his first start since his surprising triumph in England, was three shots off the pace and Tiger Woods was four back.

Sposa shot a 6-under-par 30 over the final nine holes for a 7-under 65 that was one stroke better than Australian Paul Gow, Carl Paulson, Craig Perks and David Sutherland.

A crowded leaderboard had 10 players tied for sixth at 67, including Hunter Mahon.

Woods started on the back nine and was even-par through 12 holes. He birdied three of the last six but finished the day with 31 putts.
