Hewitt advances at Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, playing in his first tournament since a first-round loss at Wimbledon, Wednesday advanced to the third round of the $380,000 Mercedes-Benz Cup.

He beat qualifier Michael Joyce, 6-3, 6-0.

Hewitt, the 2002 Wimbledon champion, lost at Wimbledon in four sets to qualifier Ivo Karlovic in one of the biggest upsets in Grand Slam history.

Also, Nicolas Kiefer improved to 3-0 lifetime against Sjeng Schalken of The Netherlands with a 6-4, 6-4 upset of the third seed.

He joined Kenneth Carlsen, who beat Prakash Amritraj, the son of two-time Wimbledon and U.S. Open quarterfinalist Vijay Amritraj, 6-4, 6-2.
