Ferrero reaches quarterfinals

SOPOT, Poland, July 31 (UPI) -- Juan Carlos Ferrero, the leader in the ATP Champions Race, overcame two match points Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Idea Prokom Open.

The Spaniard rallied from a set down to defeat Czech qualifier Frantisek Cermak, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, in their first career meeting.

Third seed Guillermo Coria of Argentina had a much easier time, blasting Belgian Christophe Rochus, 6-1, 6-0, for his 12th consecutive victory. The 21-year-old, third in the Champions Race, is coming off consecutive titles at Stuttgart and Kitzbuhel and has won 26 straight sets.

On the women's side, No. 2 seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland reached the semifinals without stepping on the court. She advanced on a walkover after No. 6 seed Mara Matevzic of Croatia pulled out before the match due to an undisclosed

illness.
