San Francisco 6, Chi. Cubs 3

July 30, 2003 at 7:27 PM   |   Comments

CHICAGO, July 30 (UPI) -- Edgardo Alfonzo had a grand slam and Jason Schmidt took a no-hitter into the sixth Wednesday as San Francisco downed the Chicago Cubs, 6-3.

Alfonzo's grand slam off Kerry Wood (10-8) in the top of the second inning staked Schmidt to a 4-0 lead. It was the second of Alfonzo's career.

Barry Bonds walked and Andres Galarraga singled to start the second. After Benito Santiago struck out, Jeffrey Hammonds, whose contract was purchased from Class AAA Fresno prior to the game, walked to load the bases.

Alfonzo drilled a 2-1 pitch into the left field bleachers, giving Schmidt (11-4) all the offense he needed.

After missing a turn due to tightness in his right forearm, Schmidt allowed only two hits in six innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
