CHICAGO, July 30 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs addressed their lack of bench depth Wednesday by re-acquiring centerfielder Doug Glanville from the Texas Rangers.
In return, they got minor league outfielder Jason Fransz and cash.
Glanville, 32, the Cubs' first-round draft pick in 1991, gives Manager Dusty Baker a veteran bat off the bench and a solid defensive option in center.
He was hitting .272 with four homers and 14 RBI in 52 games for the Rangers, and has gone 207 games without an error.
The career .281 hitter has 56 homers, 317 RBI, and 160 stolen bases in 1,000 games. He spent the 1996 and '97 seasons with Chicago, was traded to Philadelphia in December 1997, and played for the Phillies until signing with the Rangers as a free agent prior to this season.
As a pinch hitter, Glanville has a .276 career batting average.
Fransz, 22, was an eighth-round draft pick in 2002. He hit .262 with nine homers and 42 RBI in 77 games for Single-A Lansing of the Midwest League.
