U.S. rallies past Costa Rica for third

MIAMI, July 26 (UPI) -- Bobby Convey scored in the 67th minute Saturday as the United States took a 3-2 win over Costa Rica in the third-place game of the Gold Cup.

The goal, Convey's first for the national team, capped the first meeting between the U.S. and former Coach Steve Sampson, who has guided Costa Rica to a 9-4-1 record during his tenure.

The winner came when Donovan carried the ball from midfield down the left flank, toppled a defender with a juke and fed Convey, who drew out the defense before hitting the lower corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

The winner of the tournament will be decided Sunday, when Mexico hosts Brazil at Azteca Stadium.

The victory kept alive the Americans' chances to secure CONCACAF's bid to the Confederations Cup. The U.S. will go as the second-best finisher in the tournament if Brazil defeats Mexico.
