BROOKLYN, Mich., July 27 (UPI) -- Alex Barron made an aggressive move on the final lap and overtook Sam Hornish Jr. to win Sunday's IRL Firestone Indy 400.
Driving the Dallara/Chevrolet with the newly approved hybridengine, Hornish led 124 of 200 laps. However, Barron powered his Panoz G Force/Toyota high on the final lap to get to the finish line inches ahead of Hornish, the two-time defending series champion.
The victory margin was just .0121 seconds, the fourth-closest finish in IRL history..
Barron made contact with pole-sitter and defending champion Tomas Scheckter of South Africa on lap 165 and spun before recovering to get back into contention.
Scheckter finished third, also in a Panoz G Force/Toyota. He was followed by Scott Sharp and Scott Dixon.
