Mason leads Weibring by one shot

TURNBERRY, Scotland, July 26 (UPI) -- England's Carl Mason carded a 5-under-par 65 Saturday in the third round of the Senior British Open to move closer to winning his first major title.

A rookie on the European Senior Tour, Mason had six birdies with one bogey to reach 14-under 195 at the fifth and final major of the Champions Tour season. He's a stroke better than rookie D.A. Weibring.

Mason is appearing in just his third start as a member of Europe's elder circuit, having won his last appearance - the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open.

The 50-year-old's performance Saturday almost was overshadowed by Jack Nicklaus, who played his first 14 holes in 6-under par before dropping two shots down the stretch.

Tom Kite, Bruce Summerhays and Tom Watson are tied for third place at 11-under 199 while Nicklaus is ninth after a 3-under 67.
