Cowboys sign top draft pick

IRVING, Texas, July 24 (UPI) -- Cornerback Terence Newman, the Dallas Cowboys' first draft pick under Coach Bill Parcells, signed a seven-year contract Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the team's website reported it is an incentive-laden deal that includes a $13 million signing bonus.

Selected fifth overall, Newman won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back after recording five interceptions and 54 tackles for Kansas State last season. He also returned 26 punts for 388 yards and two touchdowns and 13 kickoffs for 370 yards.

The 25-year-old was the Big 12 Conference's outdoor 100-meter champion in 2001 and impressed scouts at the combine with sub-4.4 40-yard dash times, a 41-inch vertical leap and a broad jump of 11 feet, 4 inches.
