Claxton signs with Warriors

OAKLAND, Calif., July 23 (UPI) -- The Golden State Warriors on Wednesday signed free agent point guard Speedy Claxton, who served as a backup for the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Claxton reportedly received a three-year deal worth $9.9 million.

"We're excited to add a player of Speedy's caliber to our team," said General Manager Garry St. Jean. "He certainly has the ability to run a club and will be a nice fit to the up-tempo style that we like to play."

The Warriors did not want to lose Gilbert Arenas, who signed a six-year offer sheet worth more than $60 million with Washington, but they are over the salary cap and would have to dump about $13 million in order to match the offer.

Claxton raised his stock in the NBA Finals, scoring 13 points in 23 minutes in the series-clinching Game Six win over New Jersey.

He was a first-round pick in 2000 by Philadelphia.
