SAN DIEGO, July 23 (UPI) -- The San Diego Chargers have signed cornerback Sammy Davis from Texas A&M, their first-round pick in the 2003 draft, to a seven-year contract.
The team also signed Tuskegee cornerback Drayton Florence, the first of their two second-round picks, to a five-year deal.
Financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Both players reported to the team's first training camp practice Wednesday morning at The Home Depot Center.
Coach Marty Schottenheimer used the draft to overhaul a secondary which ranked last in the NFL in pass defense last season. Davis, the 30th overall pick this year, may end up starting at left cornerback opposite Quentin Jammmer, the team's first-round pick in 2002.
The 6-foot, 190-pounder is a physical corner who prefers bump-and-run coverage. A three-year starter at Texas A&M, he had 188 tackles and 11 interceptions in his college career.
Florence set a school record at Tuskegee by scoring three touchdowns on interception returns.
