PALO ALTO, Calif., July 23 (UPI) -- Jennifer Capriati needed three sets to win her first match Wednesday at the Bank of the West Classic.

Capriati is seeking her first title since capturing last year's Australian Open.

The top-seeded American got past 18-year-old Marion Bartoli of France, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in a second-round match.

Capriati, who received a bye in the first round, has reached five semifinals this year. She is playing in her first tournament since a three-set loss to eventual champion Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

Fellow American Alexandra Stevenson was not as fortunate, falling to No. 5 seed Jolena Dokic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 6-2. Dokic has reached five quarterfinals and one semifinal this year.
