Expos activate Guerrero
MIAMI, July 22 (UPI) -- Vladimir Guerrero was activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday and inserted in Montreal's starting lineup against the Florida Marlins.
Guerrero missed 39 games with a herniated disk in his back. One of the most dynamic players in the game, he was hitting .301 with 10 doubles, eight home runs and 33 RBI when he went down June 5.
Montreal was 33-26 with Guerrero in the lineup but went just 17-22 without the 27-year-old right fielder. After a three-game rehabilitation stint, he was back in the cleanup spot in the lineup.
A career .321 hitter, Guerrero has 217 homers and 656 RBI in 942 games.
Sampras likely out of U.S. Open
STATELINE, Nev., July 22 (UPI) -- It appears Pete Sampras may have reached the end of the line.
In an interview Sunday while at a celebrity golf tournament near Lake Tahoe, Sampras indicated he will withdraw from the upcoming U.S. Open.
He won that event last year, beating long-time rival Andre Agassi to snap a two-year tournament-winning drought, and hasn't played in a major this year.
"Not being at the Open this year, which I'm going to pull out of, and not playing Wimbledon, I don't miss it enough to really start training, start practicing, doing everything I have to do to be where I want to be," Sampras said. "So it tells me it's a sign to say, 'It's probably time'."
Sampras, 31, set an ATP record by finishing No. 1 in the world rankings for six straights years.
In his career, he has won Wimbledon five times, the Open five times, and the Australian Open twice. He has an overall record of 762-222 and a record 64 singles crowns.
Woman in Bryant sex scandal overdosed
EAGLE, Colo. July 22 (UPI) -- The woman who has accused Kobe Bryant of sexual assault suffered a drug overdose about a month earlier, a friend says.
Ashley Scriver said the woman, Scriver's childhood friend, suffered the overdose before the June 30 incident that led to Bryant's July 4 arrest, the Denver Post reported.
On Friday, the Eagle County district attorney announced he was charging Bryant with one count of sexual assault.
The Los Angeles Lakers star was recovering from knee surgery at the Lodge & Spa at Cordillera in Edwards, Colo., where the woman worked when the alleged incident occurred.
Bryant held a news conference in Los Angeles Friday admitting to having sex with the woman, but saying it was consensual.
Her identity is being withheld because she's an alleged sex-crime victim.
Salt Lake mulls a second Olympic bid
SALT LAKE CITY, July 22 (UPI) -- The Deseret Morning News says Salt Lake City might try for the 2018, 2022 or even the 2026 Olympic Games.
Although it's too early for any city to formally declare its candidacy, Utahans are starting to talk seriously about the chances of hosting another Winter Olympics.
Of course, other American cities are also talking about the same thing.
Less than a month ago, the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2010 Winter Games to Vancouver, Canada.
But Olympics analysts say that decision, combined with a long list of European and Asian candidates for 2014, makes it unlikely the Winter Games will return to North America until at least 2018.
Armstrong increases Tour lead
LUZ-ARDIDEN, France, July 22 (UPI) -- Lance Armstrong survived one spill and another near fall Monday before rallying to win Stage 15 of the Tour de France.
In winning the stage, he extended his overall lead to a whopping 67 seconds.
The four-time reigning champion, who had his lead shaved to 15 seconds over the last two days, fell off his bicycle with about 6 1/2 miles left in Stage 15. Iban Mayo of Spain fell with Armstrong, and recovered to finish sixth in the stage.
In a display of sportsmanship, German Jan Ullrich refused to pull away when Armstrong fell. Ullrich won Stage 12 on Friday to move from sixth to second in the overall standings.
"I'm feeling stronger every day," said Armstrong, who suffered from dehydration Friday and lost nearly 15 pounds. "The team was spectacular."
Tuesday is the second and final rest day before the race resumes
Wednesday with Stage 16, a 122-mile journey from Pau to Bayonne.
