
PITTSBURGH, July 21 (UPI) -- Jason Kendall extended his hitting streak to 23 games and Matt Stairs homered Monday to power Pittsburgh to a 5-3 victory over Houston.
Kendall singled in the first inning, then scored the game's first run on a double by Brian Giles. Stairs and Jack Wilson added RBI singles later in the frame to make it 3-0.
After Houston scored on Brad Ausmus' RBI single in the second, Kendall got the run back with a single in the bottom of the inning. Stairs homered in the third off Astros starter Tim Redding (6-9).
Redding lasted just 2 1/3 innings and allowed five runs and seven hits.
Houston got back in the game in the sixth against starter Josh Fogg (6-4) on back-to-back homers by Jeff Bagwell and Jeff Kent.
Fogg allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.
