PHILADELPHIA, July 20 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Phillies have re-acquired righthander Mike Williams from Pittsburgh for minor league southpaw Frank Brooks.
Williams, 34, was just 1-3 with a 6.27 ERA in 40 appearances for the Pirates, but converted 25 of 30 save opportunities. Last season, he set a franchise record with 46 saves.
"Mike has performed well for us for several years," said Pittsburgh Manager Lloyd McClendon. "We're sorry to see him go. We do hope for the future the player we have acquired from Philadelphia will be able to help us."
Williams, who originally was taken by Philadelphia in the 14th round of the 1990 draft, posted a 13-25 record with the Phillies from 1992-96.
He has a club option for 2004, and will join the Phillies on Monday, when a corresponding roster move will be announced. He adds to a bullpen that also includes Rheal Cormier (1.43 ERA), Turk Wendell (1.80), Dan Plesac (1.93), and Terry Adams (2.61).
