Lowery leads by five shots at BC Open

ENDICOTT, N.Y., July 19 (UPI) -- Steve Lowery completed a long day Saturday with a 4-under-par 68 that built his lead to five shots after three rounds of the $3 million BC Open.

Lowery began the day in a four-way tie for the lead. But while the other players had completed their second rounds Friday, Lowery still had seven holes to play. He made the most of them, draining four birdies to open a big lead.

After consecutive 64s, Lowery cooled off a bit with a 4-under-par 68. But so did his pursuers, and the world's 73rd-ranked player had a three-round total of 20-under 196, five strokes better than Alex Cejka of Germany and John Morgan.

With most of the world's top golfers in England for the British Open, this event is a chance for a lesser player to gain a two-year exemption to the PGA Tour.
