SANDWICH, England, July 17 (UPI) -- South African Hennie Otto grabbed the lead at the British Open Thursday while Tiger Woods survived a lost ball on his first shot of the day.
Otto shot a 3-under 68, giving him a one-shot lead after 18 holes over Davis Love III and 48-year-old Greg Norman.
Rain and gusty winds greeted early starters and the breezes intensified during the afternoon.
Woods' opening tee shot sailed into the deep rough and no one could find it, leading to a triple-bogey. He also bogeyed three straight on the back nine, but rebounded to shoot a 2-over 73.
Tied for fourth at 1-under 70 were S.K. Ho of Japan and Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden. Tom Watson and Fred Couples shot 71.
Otto is best known for breaking all his clubs and throwing them in a lake after missing the cut in his native country.
