Terms of the contract were not revealed.

"I've always had a tremendous amount of respect for this franchise, the Chicago fans and the city," Bach said. "It's great to be back and I'm really looking forward to this new challenge."

Bach just completed his 50th year of coaching and 23rd in the NBA. He spent three seasons as coach of Golden State in the 1980's, compiling an 89-157 record, but has served as an assistant since.

Bach coached under Jackson from 1989-94, during which time the Bulls won their first three NBA championships.

The Bulls went 30-52 in 2002-03, Cartwright's second as coach.
