NFL legend Tex Schramm dead at 83

DALLAS, July 15 (UPI) -- Tex Schramm, the former Dallas Cowboys president and general manager who helped build America's Team, died Tuesday at his Dallas home. He was 83.

Schramm underwent quintuple bypass surgery in 1992 and he had been in poor health in recent years, according to The Dallas Morning News.

"The NFL family has lost one of its giants," NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue told the newspaper. "As commissioner, I have benefited greatly from what Tex had a big hand in creating. Personally, I am mourning the loss of a friend of three decades."

Schramm was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991 and last spring Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced that the football innovator and master of marketing would be inducted into the Cowboy's Ring of Honor later this year.

Schramm teamed with coach Tom Landry to make the Cowboys one of the winningest and most recognized sports franchises in history. He played key roles in creating innovations such as instant replay and the wild-card playoff system.
