Chargers rookie safety to miss 4-6 weeks

SAN DIEGO, July 15 (UPI) -- San Diego Chargers rookie safety Terrence Kiel, who was shot in a carjacking attempt earlier this month, will miss four to six weeks.

The Chargers announced Tuesday that Kiel has a fractured left fibula as well as loose fragments in his knee. He will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee Wednesday.

Kiel suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen on July 4 while sitting in his car in a mall parking lot in Houston, Texas.

"For his immediate football career this season, it's a mild setback," Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said. "But, in

the big picture, we're grateful and Terrence is fortunate it wasn't worse."

A second-round pick out of Texas A&M, Kiel was expected to

compete with second-year player Vernon Fox for the starting strong safety spot after the Chargers released veteran Rodney Harrison for salary cap purposes.
