The victory set up a meeting with defending champion Carlos Moya, the top seed from Spain who knocked off Swedish wild card Robin Soderling, 6-3, 6-4.

Also advancing were second-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo, a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 winner over Hicham Arazi of Morroco; and Filippo Volandri of Italy, who pounded Frenchman Olivier Mutis, 6-3, 6-0.

The marquee quarterfinal matchup will be between Moya and Bjorkman, a doubles specialist who improved his 2003 record on clay to 3-1, winning his last three matches on the surface.
