Knicks sign top draft pick

NEW YORK, July 8 (UPI) -- The New York Knicks have signed forward Mike Sweetney, the ninth overall pick in last month's NBA Draft.

Terms were not disclosed. Sweetney is eligible for a three-year deal worth at least $4.92 million under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. The Knicks also hold the option for the 2006-07 season at $2.15 million.

The 6-8, 260-pounder left Georgetown after his junior season, when he averaged 22.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.2 blocked shots to lead the Hoyas in all three categories. The All-Big East Conference first-team selection each of the last two seasons should help a New York team that ranked near the bottom of the league in rebounding.

Sweetney is expected to play on the Knicks' entries in summer leagues in Boston and Salt Lake City.
