ORLANDO, Fla., July 7 (UPI) -- Point guard Darrell Armstrong of the Orlando Magic was arrested early Monday after being accused of hitting a female police officer outside a nightclub.
Armstrong, who also was charged with resisting arrest without violence, was released after posting $1,000 bond.
According to the police report, Armstrong stood in traffic after not being allowed to enter a taxicab outside a nightclub. When a female police officer tried to get Armstrong out of the street, he allegedly slapped the officer's hand away.
Armstrong, 35, has spent his entire nine-year career with the Magic, and is one of the franchise's most popular players. He became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
"We know Darrell, and were very surprised at the news," said General Manager John Gabriel. "We always support our players to the best of our abilities. Because this is a legal matter, we have nothing further to add at this time."
Armstrong averaged 9.4 points and 3.9 assists in 29 minutes last season.
