NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- Al Leiter, anchor of the New York Mets' rotation the last six years, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with inflammation in his right knee.
The 37-year-old lefthander, who is 8-5 with a 5.57 ERA in 17
starts this season, was disabled retroactive to June 30, making
him eligible to return following the All-Star break. He had struggled prior to being disabled, going 0-2 and allowing 13 runs and 15 hits in his last two starts.
Leiter, who has a career record of 138-108 with a 3.76 ERA in parts of 17 seasons, is the latest Met to go on the disabled list. He joins star catcher Mike Piazza, first baseman Mo Vaughn and pitchers Scott Strickland, Mike Stanton, Pedro Astacio and Grant Roberts.
New York is last in the National League East with a 39-48 record.
