SAN JOSE, Calif., July 6 (UPI) -- The San Jose Earthquakes extended their unbeaten streak to six games by battling to their third straight tie, 0-0 with the Chicago Fire.

San Jose had the best chance of the first half. In the 38th minute, Brian

Mullan found space at the top of the penalty area. He took a hard half-volley, forcing goalkeeper Zach Thornton to make a mid-air adjustment.

Defender Craig Waibel intercepted Thornton's clearing attempt, but the 'keeper came up with a one-handed stop. The Earthquakes had another solid chance in second-half stoppage time, but Thornton smothered a stab by Brian Ching.

In frantic overtime defender Todd Dunivant ran down an errant ball just before it crossed the end line and swung it in front to Ching. He managed a shot that sailed over the crossbar. Kelly Gray had a chance for Chicago, but Pat Onstad had little trouble handling his free kick in the final minute.
